About the artist
Supreeda Wongsansee is well known in Thailand as a teacher, dancer, choreographer and performance artist. She was born and grew-up in Phrae Province, so her cultural base is steeped in Northern traditions. In her search for what she really loves she found flamenco dance. She decided to go to Hungary where her passion and dedication impressed her teacher very much. In fact, she was awarded a special scholarship which enabled her to continue her studies there.
As well as studying under Katalin Inhof and many other well known professionals, teaching for more than 12 years for the Chiangmai Ballet Academy, and running her own workshops, Supreeda has also produced, performed in and organized performances locally, including many for charitable fund raising events.
Over the years her performances have shown and reflected the feelings of how to live your life in a constantly changing, city environment. How ones inner drive is affected by society around us. Her performance is not just beautiful but she wants to show how the society she lives in is progressing, the highs and lows. So she expresses her strong internal emotions and feelings through her art form, even when it pushes past accepted traditional barriers.
Inspiration:
The original inspiration came from an old wall painting at Wat Phoomin that tells the story of Bhuddism through symbolic comparison. If we really analyze the details of the villager’s way of life, which are cleverly hidden in the painting, we will notice the flirting depicted between the young people and the exchanges that took place when the first foreigners came here. From that picture we can tell creative art began a long time ago as although the artists paint in a traditional way we observe within that a very contemporary form of expression.
Because Supreeda grew up in Northern Thailand where beautiful traditional values and good teachings are important, when she first began to learn foreign flamenco dance it caused some conflict, so while she today expresses herself in a contemporary dance form, her traditional roots are never far away.
What we try to do:
During a cultural show most people are familiar with the entertainment side, and very little is shown which is eye-opening, raises questions, or just gives an opportunity to watch a deeper commentary on life. Artists get very little support to produce thought provoking works so there is a need to foster stronger cooperation and communication amongst artists and patrons of art. Coming to watch this performance will give you an opportunity to witness the results of close collaboration and team working amongst the local artistic community as many talented individuals have contributed to make this event a success. Together they have endeavored to produce a high quality, colorful and interesting program which they hope you will enjoy and which will provide you with some new experiences.

COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE
This form of theatre originated in Italy in the 16th century and quickly spread across Europe, playing a crucial role in the development of Western theatre. Playwrights who have been influenced by this style include Shakespeare, Molière and Goldoni to name just a few. It is still popular today and examples can even be found in movies and on TV.
The main features of Commedia dell’Arte are:
The role of stock characters, The use of mask, Mime techniques, Lots of humour, appealing to audiences of all ages. As this form of theatre uses a great deal of movement and mime, language is not an important factor, making this ideal for students/actors who come from different language/cultural backgrounds.
Masks - teach the actor awareness and control of movements and gestures. The masks compel the actor to recognize the essential gestures and avoid the superfluous ones. They propel the performer to an enhanced level of expression. They demand clarity of intent and precision in the use of gestures and voice.
